Iron Reef is a permanent site-specific installation by Maetherea, commissioned by Norfolk County Council as part of the Norfolk Way Art Trail. Situated on the tidal edge of the River Yare at Reedham Ferry, it acts as both a sculptural landmark and a participatory observation device—inviting visitors to engage with the shifting ecologies and seasonal rhythms of the Norfolk Broads.
Project Name: Iron Reef
Studio Name: Maetherea
Location: Reedham Ferry, Norfolk, UK
Year: 2022-2023

Constructed from curved, rusted rebar, Iron Reef evokes both the delicate verticality of reeds and the industrial heritage of the ferry’s metal infrastructure. The sculpture is amphibious—submerged by winter tides and revealed in drier months—performing a cyclical choreography of appearance and erosion. Over time, the weathering steel accumulates patina and microbial life, becoming a living surface that registers the passage of water, time, and interaction.

Designed to be approached and entered, the structure creates a pathway into the landscape. Visitors traverse the platform, reaching a viewpoint where the horizon, water, and sky align—a space for stillness, observation, and reflection. As a phenological device, Iron Reef integrates human and non-human narratives, transforming from a sculpture into an ecological instrument.

Rooted in landscape archaeology and performative design, Iron Reef is not a static monument but a responsive organism—continuously altered by natural forces and community presence. It stands as a poetic and environmental machine: a site to see and be seen, shaped by the tides, the seasons, and the people who pass through it.
