Oorjaa, the Bangalore-based first handmade paper studio known for its soulful approach to sustainable lighting, introduces Star Anise, a poetic new addition that reimagines nature’s quiet brilliance through light.
Project Name: Star Anise a New Chapter
Studio Name: Oorjaa

Rooted in craftsmanship and material consciousness, the brand continues to explore the intersections of form, function, and environmental responsibility, giving everyday organic elements a sculptural second life.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic star-shaped spice, known in India as Anasphal, Badayan, or Chakra Phool, Star Anise captures the quiet geometry of nature in a warm, glowing form. Each petal is hand-sculpted, allowing for subtle asymmetries and gentle variation that echo the handmade essence of the piece. The structure is crafted using Lantana Camara, a wild and invasive shrub that threatens native ecosystems, combined with delicately textured banana fiber paper. While Lantana lends form and strength, the banana fiber softens the silhouette, diffusing light with a delicate glow. Together, these materials turn ecological restoration into a thoughtful design story, one where waste becomes wonder, and every detail is intentional.

Ideal for intimate, earthy interiors or calm, minimalist corners, it brings a touch of sculptural warmth and a sense of slow, grounded living to a space. Its organic form sits well in contemporary homes that lean towards biophilic design, wabi-sabi aesthetics, or simply spaces that embrace handmade imperfection and natural textures. Suspended above a dining table, glowing softly in a quiet reading corner, or anchoring a cozy nook, it invites presence, conversation, and calm. In a design landscape that is steadily leaning towards biomorphic shapes and material storytelling, Star Anise feels both fresh and timeless, a piece that doesn’t just illuminate a space, but gently transforms its atmosphere.
