11. Salvaged Components as a Structural Support of Residence
Ever thought that a section of the road could be part of your home? This was done in an upcycled residence which includes about 600,000 pounds of recycled material as a part of the structure, an entire section of the road being one of those.
The interior was made of highway panels as a core structural element. This added to the industrial vibe of the structure.
12. Once a Pig Barn, Now a Modern House
Who would have imagined that once an old pig-barn could be transformed into a modern house? Sounds unique and blizzard on first thought, but one such house does exist. This old pig-barn was abandoned for a considerable time before owners decided to convert it into a house. They are required to preserve the original structure in the process.
This requirement was met by installing a prefabricated house into the original barn shell through the roof. The openings of the new house were aligned with the already existing openings of the barn. This allowed the building to retain its original look on the exterior while it is a fully functional modern house in the interior.

Oil rigs that are laid in oceans are usually abandoned once the purpose is served. Morris Architects, based in Houston believes that these abandoned oil rigs could be the perfect spot for luxury housing and upcycled hotel facilities.
This is still a conceptual idea for which the firm has won honorable mention in Radical Innovation in the Hospitality design competition.
15. A Ship redesigned as a Residence
Henry Ford designed a ship for himself with features such as state and dining rooms, a gallery, a beautiful lounge, etc., in the front part of the ship. The owners had this front part separated from the remaining structure of the ship and had it positioned by barge to South Bass Island and turned it into their residence.
16. Structural Sand Bag Walled House
This structure is made by stacking sandbags to form walls that act as great insulators. This kind of house is relatively easier to erect and is durable. Sandbags are also something easily available almost everywhere making this form of the house possible to be erected by residents themselves because of its simpler structure.
17. Recycled Plastic Bottle Igloo Building
In an attempt to bring awareness to the damage to the ecosystem caused by the usage of plastic items, an installation was designed in the form of an igloo building. This igloo structure is made up of plastic bottles and is expected to constantly change locations to bring awareness among people.
18. Modular Shipping Container Housing Designs
Shipping containers are something that is increasingly being redesigned as tiny homes. HyBrid Seattle is one such architectural firm that has shown keen interest in this area of study. They have done a great deal of conceptualization and experimentation in adapting shipping containers for residential, medical, and emergency usage.
19. Sustainable Shipping Container Home
This is an experimental project in which two houses are designed. These houses are equipped with sustainable features such as solar panels for power generation, geothermal energy support, and low energy consumption measures.
Recycled materials are included in almost every step of the manufacturing process.
20. An Airplane turned to Home
Ever imagined being in a jacuzzi, over a lake, in the cockpit of an airplane? The idea sure is unconventional, but not impossible. One such project is accomplished, in which an entire airplane was positioned by the lakeside and its interior modified to suit the modern taste of the owner. This fully functional habitual space retained its original exterior of an airplane.
