One of the most sought-after actors in the world, Johnny Depp is most recognized for his portrayals as Captain Jack Sparrow, Sweeny Todd, and Willy Wonka. The actor maintains an opulent lifestyle and makes hefty investments in residences and vehicles. There are fourteen homes in his real estate portfolio, located all around the world. His eccentric sense of style extends to his personality, which is similar to postmodernist architecture.

On June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Christopher “Johnny” Depp II was born to civil engineer John Christopher Depp and waitress Betty Sue Pa. His upbringing occurred in Florida. When he was 15 years old, he quit school and fronted many music-garage bands, including one called “The Kids.” He accepted the job as a ballpoint pen salesperson after being married to Lori A. Depp to provide for their needs. Meeting with actor Nicolas Cage during a trip to Los Angeles, California, with his wife, however, turned out to be a gift in disguise as it led to Depp’s playing debut in the low-budget horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Depp performed the titular part in Edward Scissorhands in 1990, the first of several fantastic collaborations with director Tim Burton, following several roles in teen-oriented movies (1990). Following the success of the movie, Depp established himself as a serious, slightly sinister, eccentric performer by repeatedly choosing parts that astounded both audiences and reviewers. One of his best performances of Jonny is in the movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, The curse of the black Pearl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and later Alice in Wonderland.

Why post-modernist architect?

Jonny has a unique style in real life as well as in reel life. With his phenomenal performances in the fantasy genre, he proved that he has a creative mindset, in contrast to the ordinary; which would reflect in his architectural career if he chose to be an architect.

A response to the austerity, formality, and lack of diversity in modern architecture led to the emergence of the style or movement known as postmodern architecture in the 1960s, which aims to build unique works of architecture that seem, unlike anything that has come before by combining classic and modern elements in a typically irreverent and eclectic way. Postmodern architecture is the most divisive, provocative, unique, and unforgettable structure in the history of architecture. Postmodern architecture is devoid of ornament and emotion, constructed from slick modern materials like steel and glass, and has no sense of location. The most successful postmodern structures reject traditional beauty and ideas of what constitutes good taste in favor of personality, wit, and a satirical take on earlier architectural motifs and trends. During the 1980s and 1990s economic boom, postmodernism grew and flourished, leaving a wide range of loud, bold, and genre-defying architectural monuments in its wake, first in the United States and then elsewhere in the world in regions like Europe, Japan, and, Australia where its influence expanded. Postmodernism continues to impact modern architecture today.

The similarity between postmodernism and Johnny Depp’s movie character

Binocular building and Alice in Wonderland

Frank Gehry used a giant pair of binoculars to unite his office buildings for Chiat/Day in a design no one could overlook. This office building in Venice, Los Angeles, was finished in 1991, and its facade is believed to have been the result of pure coincidence. Even in a city where Gehry is well-known, the design’s diverse fusion of creative and architectural influences distinguishes the structure and its uniqueness.

one can compare the large size of binoculars with the character of Jonny Depp as “hatter” in Alice in Wonderland, It tells the tale of a young girl named Alice who enters a fantasy realm full of anthropomorphic creatures after falling down a rabbit hole.

Inntel hotel by Wam Architecten and Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

The structure, known as the Inntel hotel, inspired by postmodernism has overlapping green timber facades like those of vernacular homes. There are 160 rooms in the 40-meter-tall, 11-story skyscraper. Visually, the building is composed of about seventy distinct houses stacked in a variety of arrangements that are each painted a different shade of the distinctive Zaan green. The hotel is distinctive and well-known, yet original and eccentric.

The character of ‘willy Wonka’ an unusual candy maker in the movie charlie and the chocolate factory shows such a miss match. while the scene of the chocolate factory having a chocolate river and the whole garden depicts the surrealist environment that one can feel around the inntel hotel.

Robot building and Edwardscissors hands

An artificial guy with scissors for hands and an incomplete construction spends a lonesome existence is the main character of the movie Edward Scissorhands played by Jonny Depp, which truly resembles the robot building situated in the Sathorn business district of Bangkok, Thailand houses United Overseas Bank’s Bangkok headquarters. Sumet Jumsai created the Bank of Asia building as a reaction to neoclassical and high-tech postmodern architecture to reflect the computerization of banking. The building’s characteristics, such as its antennas, eyes, and gradually regressing walls, add to both its robotic aspect and its usefulness.

The above-mentioned example surely lays johnny Depp’s different characters in the movies reflect the post-modernist architecture nature in real life. Both show distinctive and quirky characteristics and also make people question their existence.
