Spacefiction Studio was started by Baba Sashank and Vindhya Guduru in 2015 in Hyderabad. Intending to blend design disciplines with architecture as the base, the firm handles projects of various scales and nature spanning various projects from architecture and interiors of large-scale housing, institutions, commercial spaces, to everything related to design and art. The studio is comprised of young, like-minded folks that have stirred up a storm in conventional housing patterns. Their iconic minimalist fresh and vibrant designs have paved the way for several editorial mentions and international recognition.
Here are 10 projects by Spacefiction Studio:-
1. Inward House | Spacefiction Studio
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 3600 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
The design arose from the need for a home, with a space that stimulates activities and interactions in the family. The ground has only a bedroom, a kitchen and a prayer room as the enclosed areas, with the dining and living located in the open area. The first floor has three bedrooms as built-up areas with a small study in between. Between these is a mezzanine seating area over the parking which acts as a visual connection between these two floors. The entertainment area is a separate structure on the terrace. Windows from all the spaces look into the open area, which houses a garden lit by a skylight on the roof.
2. Soul Garden
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 3900 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
Soul Garden is the name given to a family residence and it rightly encompasses a sense of privacy, lightness, and proximity to nature. The lack of sufficient space in urban cities incited Spacefiction Studio to turn the design outside-in, placing the garden at the center, around which the rest of the spaces function. All the rooms open up into the garden and the areas that immediately surround it have operable sliding glass doors so they can be used as indoor spaces or extensions of the garden.
The laser-cut, mild steel perforations are used throughout the house in the form of operable louvers and partition screens. At the basement, there is a garage, games room, and a room for domestic help, while the upper-level houses the main bedroom and kids’ bedrooms.
Aesthetically, Soul Garden boasts a sense of playfulness and vitality. Vibrant yellow flooring is complemented by the occasional yellow on the walls, accents of blue, and the luscious green of the foliage throughout the house. Humble white concrete walls, minimalistic interiors, and hints of terracotta and timber balance this bold palette.
3. Dock 45
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 9800 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
This modular club/bar uses the expression of containers without actually using any. The seemingly stacked up containers on the outside, give way to a large open courtyard upon entrance through which diners view the musical acts from various levels. The outer skin of the corrugated metal sheet gives way to intermittent glass panels, to offer wonderful views of the bistro. The lighting is used as an architectural element to distinguish the place from a neighborhood bar on the weekdays, to a vibrant club on the weekends – This is done by keeping the interiors mainly white, while the custom-designed lighting is the only pop of color.
4. Free Flow Junction Bar
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 7000 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
The design incorporates two rectangular sections of seating, of two floors each, with a double-height area in between which serves as a large stage for performances to take place. Both the seating sections look down onto the stage area with ease. Primary colors pop up over a neutral palette of concrete floor, exposed bricks, earthy tiles, and dark metal while vintage or rail-oriented graffiti is littered all around the place. The furniture is all eclectic, a mix of industrial and traditional, bunk seats resembling the interiors of rail bogies, fit right into the theme of the eatery.
5. Free Flow Traffic Bar | Spacefiction Studio
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 4700 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
The rise of metropolitan culture in Hyderabad witnessed the growth of café culture and a strong influence on the activities of the youth from neighboring cities. As a result, the challenge was to plan a two-floor in such a way that everyone gets an uninterrupted view of the National park upfront. The mezzanine floor added to the terrace is a complete metal structure ending with a ten-foot cantilever. Exposed brick, red-painted metal sheets and pipes, exposed concrete, checkered metal sheet, polished packing wood, corrugated metal and glass capture the urban-scape of the city and contribute to the majority of the material palette of this bar. Coupled with wall graffiti and art installations from local artists, the bistro is reminiscent of vintage pop culture.
6. Bonbons
Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 650 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
Bonbons is a petite patisserie set amidst a dense residential neighborhood with predominantly high-rise buildings. The linear space is efficiently planned for a kitchen space, display unit, and seating. The material palette is iconic of the Studio’s style of being limited to a trio of concrete, wood, and white walls: broken with accents of aqua blue and chrome yellow. The furniture pieces are custom-made to match the minimal nature of the space using only metal and packing wood. Hexagons are a key motif unifying the entire space- from the honeycomb pattern on the walls, geometric lighting fixtures to the wooden hexagonal wall décor.
7. Vessella Villa
Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 3500 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
The Villa is a part of a row housing community, housing a young, working couple and their 2-year-old son. The family wanted a minimal clutter-free home to accommodate the growing needs of their family, so the existing structure was altered to open up the house by providing a double-height space and a skylight. Most of the house is white with warm wooden tones blended in meticulously. The furniture and furnishings are kept minimal and neutral, while décor elements, cushions, and toys add pops of accents throughout the space. The fun element is the kid’s room, which was inspired by Andy’s room in ‘Toy Story’.
8. Apollo Theatre
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 3300 sq.yards
STATUS: Completed
The design was born out of a need for a common meeting ground for cultural and educational interactions in the form of an Amphitheater. The project remains veiled from the main street by high green mounds acting as visual and noise buffers while also offering the height required for the sector-shaped seating looking onto the center stage. Seatings are designed around the existing foliage, proving the required natural shading for the most part of the day.
9. Garden Organic Café
Architecture
AREA: 112 sq ft
LOCATION: Hyderabad
STATUS: Completed
A prototype kiosk was to be designed, of a health food brand- so it could be replicated at a smaller scale, throughout the country in large malls and other corporate spaces. This was to be designed within a confined space of 8X14 ft. The two frontal sides were divided into squares of 5X3 and 3X3. Each of these squares forms or becomes a function of this food kiosk- stools, table, magazine rack, menu display, etc. Reprocessed metal, perforated packing wood, red laminate, glass, and paint make up the material palette of the kiosk.
10. Never(Apart)Ment | Spacefiction Studio
Architecture, Interior
LOCATION: Hyderabad
AREA: 10000 sq ft
STATUS: Completed
The idea was to incept a model of the apartment which provides privacy, all while keeping the sizable family connected. This was achieved by the studio’s characteristic practice of opening up living spaces into large open courts- a double-height in nature that offers connectivity between the levels preventing social isolation with the family. The oldest generation is allotted the lowermost, first floor to the next one and the youngest generation has the last two floors; all while leaving space for a probable future generation, which is currently used as recreation spaces. The interior palette is light in nature and the furniture is kept to the bare minimum.
