NBBJ are an ideas-driven design firm known for its empathetic design process and constantly reinvents itself to serve its clients better, so it stands to order that when VIVO approached them to design their headquarters in Shenzhen, their design illustrated cutting-edge materials and sustainable practices. In this case study, we will delve into the three fundamental aspects of the Vivo Headquarters; its ground-breaking design, the utilisation of unique materials and construction methods and its dedication to sustainability.
Design
With construction beginning in 2020 and forecasted to be completed in 2025, the design of the Vivo Headquarters was carefully planned and executed to embody a dynamic and visually captivating space. NBBJ aimed to create a headquarters reflecting Vivo’s forward-thinking nature and providing a functional and inspiring environment for its employees.
To achieve this vision, NBBJ implemented ingenious design solutions seamlessly blending nature and architecture. One standout feature is the integration of green spaces within the building. NBBJ recognised the importance of incorporating nature into the workplace on every floor, fostering employee well-being and productivity. The building boasts outdoor terraces, gardens, and vertical green walls, establishing a harmonious union between the natural world and the built environment.
Additionally, the architects employed an open floor plan concept to encourage collaboration and interaction among employees. This design approach promotes transparency and communication, elevating the overall work and retail environment. Large glass facades and strategically placed atriums allow abundant natural light to permeate the interior spaces, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting and creating a bright and inviting atmosphere.

Materials / Construction
The Vivo Headquarters not only captivates with its design but also stands out due to its innovative construction techniques and materials. NBBJ employed cutting-edge methods to realise its 150-meter vision and push the boundaries of traditional architecture.
One striking feature of this spiralling tower is its facade, which showcases a combination of glass and lightweight aluminium. This deliberate choice ensures efficient energy consumption as the glass panels maximise natural light while providing excellent thermal insulation. The lightweight aluminium frames reduce the building’s carbon footprint, emphasising its sustainability.
To achieve the building’s fluid and curved forms, NBBJ implemented advanced construction techniques. Integrating parametric design tools and state-of-the-art digital modelling allowed for precise fabrication and assembly. This approach streamlined the construction process, ensuring accuracy while minimising waste.
Another noteworthy aspect of the Vivo Headquarters is the incorporation of smart technologies throughout the building. These technologies enable efficient energy management and temperature control and optimise the overall operational performance of the headquarters.
Sustainability

The integration of green spaces serves a dual purpose by acting as natural air filters, enhancing the overall air quality within the building. The green walls and plant-filled atriums also contribute to a balanced microclimate, positively impacting employee well-being. By stepping the landscaping, the architects can reflect the natural ecosystem of Southern China. The lower terraces have sparse trees, the middle atrium features denser subtropical mountain forest plants, and the upper terraces have a sparser rugged alpine forest reminiscent of a transition from a forest floor to a mountaintop.
Energy-efficient systems play a pivotal role in reducing the building’s carbon footprint. The Vivo Headquarters employs advanced insulation techniques, high-performance glazing, and efficient HVAC systems to minimise energy consumption. Additionally, integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, decreases reliance on traditional power grids, further promoting sustainability.
Water conservation is another aspect of the building’s sustainability efforts.
