The fashion industry is a realm where trends change rapidly. By the time one is just getting adjusted to a trend or learning about it, a new trend comes in. It is hard to adjust and adapt in time.  However, Marc Jacobs, time after time has done exactly that. Marc Jacobs’ influence is enduring, unlike the hallmark styles of businesses like Burberry’s classic trench coats or Bottega Veneta’s intrecciato weave. What sets him apart is his ability to read social cues and reframe fashion standards.

Marc Jacobs – The Founder

Born in New York in 1963, Marc Jacobs faced many challenges growing up. His father died when he was seven years old and his mother suffered from dementia which left her unable to take care of the children as she should. In an article in the New York Times Style Magazine, Jacobs mentions a few incidents with his mother that are some of his darker childhood moments. In his early teens, Jacobs went to live with his paternal grandmother. His grandmother is the person to whom Jacobs often attributes his passion for fashion. It was his grandmother who had taught him knitting. She taught him about styling. This was the starting point of his journey in fashion.

Jacobs attended the High School of Art and Design and Parsons School of Design, in New York. At Parsons, he won three of the highest awards given in the school. At 15, he worked at Charivari – a high-end boutique that is now defunct, as a stock boy. His first line was designed when he was studying at Parsons. With that first line  – a line of hand-knit sweaters, he attracted the attention of Barbara Weiser who had them professionally produced and sold in her boutique under the label Marc Jacobs. The collection also won him the Perry Ellis and the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble awards.

The Rise of the Marc Jacobs Brand

The start of Marc Jacobs’ career was with his line of hand-knit sweaters that had caught the attention of his long-time business partner – Robert Duffy. Duffy had hired Jacobs for the company he was then working for. In 1986, Jacobs and Duffy established a partnership and started the Marc Jacobs label. The subsequent year, he won the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent and became the youngest designer to have received it. Jacob and Duffy joined Perry Ellis in 1988 where Jacobs was the creative director for the women’s design unit. It was in that same year that Jacobs released his famous grunge collection for Perry Ellis. Although it wasn’t well received at the time and had even led to him being fired, it soon became an icon in the fashion industry. The mixing of street fashion with haute couture became a norm that is followed today.

In 1993 he started his brand, Marc Jacobs International with the help of Robert Duffy. The label quickly became known for its designs and take on luxury fashion. Marc Jacobs’ talent for mixing edge with timeless class struck a chord with a wave of fashion fans. His collections came to represent elegance attracting a following and solidifying his status as an influential trendsetter worldwide. Over the years Marc Jacobs has continued to innovate, always pushing boundaries and setting standards in style to keep his brand ahead in the fashion world.

With flagship stores opening up all over the world in the fashion capitals of New York, Paris, London, and Tokyo, Jacobs established his brand as a dominant force in modern luxury. He expanded his product line beyond ready-to-wear to include accessories, shoes, cosmetics, and fragrances; each line reflected his unique fusion of cutting-edge ingenuity and classic style. Collaborations with recognizable brands demonstrated Jacobs’ ability to combine innovation and tradition, most notably during his revolutionary tenure as Creative Director at Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2014. In addition to receiving high praise and multiple honours, his creations became cultural icons that sparked trends and captivated the interest of fashion fans everywhere. Some of his famous and iconic collections include, the Marc Jacobs AutmnWinter, 2006 where he included design elements as a nod to cultures that he had come into contact with, the Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2012 collection where eccentrism was the main theme and the Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2016 collection where his iconic Kiki boots were debuted.

Marc Jacobs Today

With the discontinuation of the Marc line which was the economy generator for the Marc Jacobs label, the company has become unstable. The new collections that are being released are not evoking the same reactions in crowds as they once did. Jacobs is not in touch with the current trends. However, in recent times the company has launched a Heaven by Marc Jacobs catering to the current Y2K fashion trend. This sub-brand aims to capture the attention of younger consumers seeking retro aesthetics. The brand has also launched a new cosmetic line. Only time will tell if the brand will make a comeback in the fashion industry or if it has already soared and begun to fade from fashion history, quickly overshadowed by new competitors.
