After remaining closed for six years, the Cinerama Dome is finally set to return. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Alamo Drafthouse have announced plans to restore the iconic Hollywood landmark, with restoration work expected to begin next month and the theatre scheduled to reopen in early 2028. The announcement follows Sony’s acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse in 2024, marking the company’s continued investment in the future of theatrical exhibition. More importantly, it signals a commitment to preserving one of cinema’s most recognisable architectural landmarks rather than replacing or reinventing it.
A Landmark Returns
Originally opened in 1963, the Cinerama Dome is widely recognised as the world’s first all-concrete geodesic dome. Designed by Welton Becket & Associates, the theatre quickly became an architectural and cinematic icon with its distinctive concrete polygonal shell and an impressive 86-foot curved screen designed to enhance immersive movie viewing. Beyond its striking appearance, the Dome represented an era when cinema architecture itself was part of the spectacle, attracting audiences not only for the films being screened but also for the experience of watching them within such an innovative space.
The theatre’s future became uncertain after the COVID-19 pandemic forced its closure. Its former owner, Pacific Theatres, which also operated ArcLight Cinemas, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2021, leaving the Cinerama Dome and the surrounding complex shuttered. Since then, the vacant landmark has remained a symbol of both Hollywood’s cinematic legacy and the challenges faced by traditional theatres in an increasingly digital entertainment landscape.
Restoration Over Reinvention
Rather than transforming the building into a completely new entertainment venue, Sony and Alamo Drafthouse have announced that the restoration will prioritise the architectural identity that made the Cinerama Dome famous. According to the companies, restoration efforts will include the historic concrete polygons, the original curved screen, projection booths, concession areas, and presentation systems. Significantly, the theatre will continue operating under the Cinerama name instead of being rebranded as an Alamo Drafthouse location. Unlike Alamo’s signature dine-in cinemas, the Dome will retain its traditional movie-going experience, preserving both its historic character and its immersive presentation.
This decision distinguishes the project from a conventional renovation. Many heritage entertainment venues are modernised to accommodate new commercial models, often at the expense of their original identity. In contrast, the restoration of the Cinerama Dome appears to embrace architectural conservation as a guiding principle. By preserving the building’s defining elements instead of replacing them, Sony and Alamo Drafthouse are acknowledging that the theatre’s cultural value extends beyond its ability to screen films. Its architecture is an essential part of its legacy.
The Adjacent Alamo Drafthouse
While the Dome itself will remain largely unchanged, the adjacent former ArcLight 14-screen complex will undergo a different transformation. It will reopen as a full Alamo Drafthouse cinema featuring dine-in service, curated programming, premium-format auditoriums, immersive audio systems, 4K laser projection, and both 35mm and 70mm projection capabilities. Additional amenities, including private karaoke rooms, will also be introduced. This creates an interesting contrast within the redevelopment. The surrounding complex will evolve to meet contemporary expectations, while the Cinerama Dome will continue offering the historic cinematic experience for which it became internationally recognised.
Sony executives have framed the restoration as an investment not only in exhibition but also in Hollywood itself. Company leadership has described the project as an opportunity to preserve an irreplaceable cultural destination while reinforcing the value of communal movie-going. Alamo Drafthouse has similarly positioned the restoration within its broader history of reviving historic theatres, citing previous preservation efforts that balanced heritage with contemporary audiences.
What Comes Next
From an architectural perspective, however, several questions remain unanswered. While the announcement outlines which historic features will be restored, no restoration budget has been disclosed, nor has the architectural or conservation firm responsible for the project been identified. Details regarding preservation strategies, construction methods, or phased restoration timelines have also not been released beyond the target reopening in early 2028. As a result, many architectural aspects of the project will only become clearer as restoration work progresses.
Even with these unanswered questions, the return of the Cinerama Dome represents an important moment for both architecture and cinema. At a time when historic entertainment venues are frequently demolished, repurposed, or extensively modernised, the decision to restore rather than reinvent one of Hollywood‘s most celebrated theatres reflects a growing appreciation for architectural heritage. By preserving its iconic form while allowing the surrounding complex to evolve, Sony and Alamo Drafthouse are ensuring that future generations will experience the Cinerama Dome not simply as a relic of cinema history, but as a living landmark that continues to define Hollywood’s cultural landscape.
