When we think about interiors, tiles are among the most common materials that come to mind. In the earlier days, ceramic tiles were used commonly. But in today’s time, vitrified tiles have emerged in the market with better advantages than ceramic tiles, making them the popular choice of the people. Vitrified tiles are a mixture of 60% silica and 40% clay with small quantities of quartz and feldspar. The process of vitrification is the melting and blending with the help of hydraulic pressing of these materials to form a glass-like element. This process accomplishes under high temperatures allowing them to maintain their sheen even after several years of use. This technique makes the tiles less porous, scratch and stain resistant, water and frost resistant, durable and stronger than ceramic tiles, and low maintenance and long life.
The tiles categorize under four types – full body vitrified tiles, glazed vitrified tiles, double charge vitrified tiles, and soluble salt vitrified tiles.
- Full body Vitrified Tiles – These tiles have long lives and are sustainable in high-traffic areas. They have a uniform colour throughout the tile, making the scratches invisible. These qualities make them expensive.
- Glazed Vitrified Tiles – These tiles use digital technology on glazed surfaces. Hence, there are many designs and patterns in the market.
- Double Charged Vitrified Tiles – These tiles use two-colour pigments and press-prints a three to four millimeter thick layer of a double pigmented pattern on the tiles. They are durable and have low maintenance.
- Soluble Salt Vitrified Tiles – These tiles use soluble salt on the tiles to get the desired colour, design, and patterns. One of the disadvantages of this tile is that it is not long-lasting and would fade away. The tile is cheaper than any other vitrified tiles.
