Aayojan School of Architecture and Design, Jaipur: Where Design Curiosity meets Active Implication

Aayojan is promoted and managed by a registered society named SEDRAA (Society for Education Development & Research in Architecture and Art), composed mainly of Architects. At Aayojan, the excellence of design legacy has been continued since 1999, and learning is based on the detailed architectural practices. Instigating curiosity in students and an intense desire for teaching in faculties has been the core mission of the esteemed institute. Architecture strongly persists as an allied field of design, which requires in depth understanding, developing from design principles to modelling structures. With appropriate guidance and a strong desire to acquire new skills, Aayojan fosters hands-on workshops, site visits, and studio driven learning environment to bring out appreciable and magnificent design practitioners.

Context, Concept and Construction: Perceiving before Performing

The only mantra that Aayojan follows is “Context, Concept and Construction”, a design philosophy encouraging fellow scholars and tutors. Students are primarily required to begin research with the site context, which is the foundation of any design project. The parameters are as follows: Climate, accessibility, local building construction and materials, vegetation and culture. This becomes an important stage to identify the building’s response to the surrounding neighbourhood.

It is then followed by the concept stage, which is initiated by the research and terminates with a defined approach to design. Faculties in Aayojan promote students to showcase their creative thinking, collaborating with aesthetics, but to be mindful of the fact of curating a functional design.

The third and last stage implies construction and development of a project, which involves drawings, a 3D model and representation through sketches. The understanding of technical structural knowledge, as well as construction and material technology emerge at this stage. At Aayojan, aside from the compliance, the mentors believe in untangling the creative cloud of the student.

Design Juries: A kick-start to Critical Thinking and Emboldening

Aayojan’s tradition of conducting juries possesses a positive impact on students, rather than interpreting it in an offensive way. While representing the design, the meaningful dialogue moves ahead with a squabble of favour and against, with students defending their design and the jurors/externals expressing critiques. It gives students an opportunity to present their ideas in front of peers and architectural experts by justifying their design intent and adapting valuable feedback. Design juries often boost an individual’s confidence for presenting one’s own design, not only in college but also for further professional development.

Courses Offered: Ranging from Design to Architecture

Aayojan offers a range of design courses along with architecture that allows students to explore through options rather than being fixated on one thing. The institution has a structured academic framework that combines practical knowledge with studio sessions, and together makes a definite learning ecosystem.

The Bachelor’s of Architecture (B.Arch) is an undergraduate program that builds the foundation of budding architects with philosophical knowledge, contextual studies, historical concepts, heritage cities and structural integrity. Along with this, there are several distinct design-focused programs (B.Des) like Interior design, interaction design and allied creative fields which provide students with a wider perspective.

These multidisciplinary programs strengthen students to thrive in professional architecture and design practices.

ASA: Beyond Studio-based Learning

As people say, never a dull moment at Aayojan’s campus. Apart from academically based learning, the institute is responsible for conducting workshops, site visits, guest lectures by experts and extracurricular cultural and sports activities. The institute assists students and faculty to enrol themselves with the professional bodies for numerous benefits and an individual’s network with experts and peers for long-term gains.

Some of the associations and societies that collaborates with Aayojan are ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), ISHRAE (Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), IPA (Indian Plumbing Association), FSI (Fire & Security Association of India), ISLE (Indian Society of Lighting Engineers), IIA (Indian Institute of Architects), IIID (Institute of Indian Interior Designers), Rotaract Club.

Besides these workshops, there is an annually organised cultural and sports fest for social collaboration, allowing students to take a pause from academic deadlines and fostering a change in routine.

Next Follows: Shaping of Future Architects

At Aayojan, the enlightenment of students has been carried since the start of their journey in this field, but at the final stretch, it is more about implication than instruction. Through constant lectures and studio sessions, students have been taught about sustainability, structural stability, landscape design, interior design, heritage conservation, urban development, disaster resilience and all the parameters required to construct a design.

When students carry their designs integrating these parameters in some or the other way and ensure a user-centric design, it not only makes them an Architect but also a conscious environmental contributor to society.

Aayojan nurtures their student’s well-being by providing them with a learning, collaborative and innovative environment.
