The Kgoro: Architecture Rooted in Community
At the heart of the circular library design is the kgoro, a term traditionally referring to the central, shared gathering space where family homesteads meet in Sotho-Tswana communities. This space was historically the cultural and social hub for sharing knowledge and strengthening community bonds.
A4AC Architects translates this ancestral logic into the 21st century:
- The Design Principle: The contemporary kgoro is a circular, shaded courtyard that serves as an open-air amphitheater for public gatherings, storytelling, and informal learning.
