This project involved the complete rebuild of a luxury hillside residence in the fire-prone Oakland Hills of California. After the original home was destroyed in a major wildfire, the new design needed to meet modern fire-resistance requirements while also delivering a high-quality, livable, and visually refined space.
Project Name: Rebuilding in a High Fire Zone Oakland Hills
Studio Name: TECHNE – Architecture & Development
Location: Oakland, California
Completion: 2016
Client: Developer

The steep and narrow lot created a number of design and construction challenges. It included limited access and a 30-foot drop from the street to the rear yard. Techne managed the entire process from early site analysis through permitting and construction coordination. This allowed for faster approvals and more efficient execution in a complex jurisdiction.
The layout was developed using 3D massing studies to balance privacy, natural light, views, and outdoor flow. Fire-rated materials were selected to meet code without compromising design intent. The result is a modern home with expansive glazing, natural finishes, and comfortable indoor-outdoor living that performs to current fire zone standards.

Completed for a private developer, the project is now seen as one of the most well-designed and best-functioning homes in the neighborhood. It reflects Techne’s ability to combine technical performance with architectural value in fire-affected regions.
