One of the primary tasks of a school is to offer children orientation. On the first day of school in particular it is especially important for pupils to be able to swiftly place their trust in the “big building”. Questions such as “Where is the staff room?”, “How do I get from the classroom to the gym?” and “What part of the building is the library in?” can represent a considerable challenge in a complex school building.

This is the starting point for the wayfinding system at the Forsmannstraße school in Hamburg. The goal is to meet the requirements of pupils who are either not yet able to read or who have only just learned to write.

Orientation in school buildings can be a real challenge. Wayfinding systems are therefore crucial. They provide clear orientation and lead directly from outside, through the whole building, to the top floor.
A school that is easy for people to find their way around promotes well-being and creates an atmosphere of safety and trust. If pupils can find their way around easily, they feel more connected to the school. This leads to less vandalism and increases fun and motivation.
Symbols and pictograms convey safety, promote a sense of community and strengthen identification with the school. They are also recognisable outside the building and create sympathy.

An effective wayfinding system should be easy to understand for all users, regardless of their individual abilities. The pictograms Studio Gourdin developed for the Forsmannstraße school in Hamburg are designed in such a way that even children who cannot yet read can easily find their way around the building. This is particularly important as children may be too shy to ask for directions.
By using easy-to-understand pictograms, we are breaking down barriers and making the building accessible to everyone.

The wayfinding system was honoured with GOLD in the “Wayfinding for Graphic Design” category at the “Indigo Design Award 2024” and bronze in the “Best wayfinding or signage” category at the “Transform Awards Europe 2024”.
