Behind Al Bahr Towers: The Vision

Designed as an office building in 2012 by the architects at Aedas, the Al Bahr Towers reflect a harmonious blend of modernism with the cultural heritage of the Middle East. The Abu Dhabi Investment Council, clients of The Al Bahr Towers envisioned a structure that is not only striking in terms of architecture but also energy efficient and consistent considering UAE’s increasing emphasis on sustainability. The design intent showcases a combination of performance-oriented technology, local architecture, and bio-inspiration. Integrating traditional Islamic architectural components into a contemporary framework was a crucial component of the design concept. At the centre of this concept was the adaptive facade system, which provides an active way to control solar heat gain while lowering energy use and maximising natural light. Using cutting-edge design techniques in line with LEED certification requirements, the architects and engineers set out to develop a structure that could lower its carbon footprint. The “Mashrabiya,” a traditional Islamic latticework screen utilised for privacy and shading, served as the model for the adapted facade.

Adaptive Facades: A Deep Dive

Adaptive facades are a modern technological marvel. They change the way buildings engage with the surrounding spaces. These smart building envelopes are made to improve energy efficiency, comfort, and aesthetics, all at the same time by reacting dynamically to outside factors like sunlight, temperature, wind, and precipitation. The dynamic facade technology of the Al Bahr Towers is the foundation of its environmental initiatives. More than 2,000 umbrella-shaped devices that cover the outside of the structure are installed on these towers. These devices work in a similar way to smart sunshades, opening and shutting in reaction to heat, sunshine, and changes in the sun’s position during the day. The computerised system that runs the facade tracks the position of the sun and modifies the shade units in real time to optimise efficiency. 

The shades are left closed in the morning to let in more natural light from the low, less powerful sun. The shades progressively open as the day goes on as the sun rises, shutting off direct sunlight and cutting solar heat input by as much as 50%. The benefits of adaptive facades are that they maintain a comfortable indoor climate by controlling such factors. These facades additionally enhance the well-being and productivity of occupants thereby reducing glare and maintaining a uniform indoor temperature.

Sustainability: The Ultimate Key

The adaptive facade technology in architecture, besides aesthetic qualities, plays a critical role in enhancing sustainability. It can modulate heat and light intensities, which in turn, causes the buildings to consume considerably less energy than conventional buildings of a similar scale. The facade manages the entry of sunlight into the building, reducing the demand for artificial cooling. In hot deserts like Abu Dhabi, the cooling process is responsible for a significant part of energy expenditures. The responsive shaded windows reduce the energy load from air conditioning for exceeding solar heat gain, and thus improve energy consumption and operational costs. 

The smart facade provides the Al Bahr Towers with a lower carbon footprint as compared to conventional skyscrapers. The dynamic shading system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by cutting the energy used for interior cooling. This innovative approach is consistent with a larger mission towards adopting green building principles and sustainability efforts in the UAE. Sustainability strategies adopted by Al Bahr Towers brought the Silver rating of the LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, which is the internationally accepted standard for environmentally friendly building practices. The towers show how smart technology and sustainable architecture are intertwined to produce green buildings. 

The ‘Mashrabiya’ Approach

Mashrabiya plays a crucial role in distinguishing the Al Bahr Towers; they combine modern technology with traditional Islamic architecture. The external shading system was inspired by the Mashrabiya, a characteristic feature found in the windows and balconies throughout Islamic Architecture, that controls the natural light while protecting privacy. With this technique, age-old ideas transform into contemporary designs, deriving the modified facade. Being also called “shade devices,” this retains this unique concept of architecture and addresses contemporary environmental issues. The interplay of these two aspects thus forms a structure, giving orientation to the future and being a memorial for the past.
