Outstanding Universal Value

The immense universal importance of the rock shelters in Bhimbetka transcends both geographic and cultural divides. Their existing relevance is attributed to the following factors:

Human Expression and Creativity: The Bhimbetka rock shelters are evidence of humanity’s innate creative spirit, which dates back millions of years. This area’s colourful and varied rock art exemplifies the urge shared by all people to communicate their thoughts, opinions, and experiences through images. Throughout all cultures and eras, human culture is fundamentally shaped by this inbuilt urge for expression.

The striking region of sandstone outcrops known as Bhimbetka is encircled by a rather thick forest that rises over the plateau in central India. Its universal significance is found in the way a rich accumulation of rock paintings inside rock shelters offers an apparently uninterrupted line of living culture from the Stone Age to the historical era, as well as the cultural continuity in art and hunting and gathering customs between the art of the rock shelters and the surrounding villages.

Criteria of UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO organisation selects historical sites based on universal values and criteria. It is essential to meet at least one of its criteria to get selected as a heritage site. The rock shelters of Bhimbetka are nominated as a ‘cultural landscape’ under criteria (iii) and v of the UNESCO organisation.

According to criteria (iii), The significance of Bhimbetka is linked to how people have interacted with the environment and how those interactions have endured over an incredibly long period. The hunting and gathering customs depicted in the rock art images are still practised in the nearby villages, albeit in a modified manner. The custom of painting symbols and images, which have been seen in enormous quantities and for many millennia in the caves is still practised in the nearby villages on houses and shrines.

The landscape of Bhimbetka is strongly linked to a hunting and gathering custom that dates back a very long way and is still ingrained in the customs of the Adivasi villages that surround the rock art site. The practice of hunting and gathering is becoming extremely rare worldwide, although it used to be common.

A cultural treasure trove, Bhimbetka offers visitors a window into the past and the astounding advancement of human civilization. It serves as a pulsating reminder of the enduring creative potential of the human spirit and the close connection between art, culture, and way of life. Its significance goes far beyond its archaeological value.
