Going to architecture school has taught a lot of skills that a person before entering the field would not have even thought about. Important skills like handdrafting, modelling, important software like Autocad, Revit, Rhinoceros, Grasshopper etc were taught in an architecture school. Apart from these skills, following concepts have been developed over the time of five years which are as follows:-

Unveiling Architectural Insights: Lessons from the Design School-Sheet1

1. Concepts like sciography and its importance

Sciography is a branch of drawing which deals with the projection of shadows. The study is important as it tells us the direction of the sun and also tells us the depth of the object drawn.

2. Concepts like sustainability & vernacular architecture

Sustainability in architecture is something which is developing and it includes utilizing passive and active strategies, biomimicry, etc. Concepts like urban farming and vertical gardens have also been understood.

Few of the key features of the vernacular architecture  are also utilized in the sustainable architecture. Features like use of locally available material, catering to the local needs etc have been incorporated using the modern technology.

Biomimicry in architecture is widely used in the present day as the buildings tend to replicate a natural object. For example, Esplanade theatre in Singapore is a replication of the skin of durian plant.

3. Measured Drawings

Measured drawing is a concept where the dimensions of already existing building on site are taken are details of the building are drawn to scale. This method of drawing is done after years of the construction of the building to know the present status of the building.

4. Important services like plumbing etc.

Building services are the most important function of any building. Plumbing, lighting, acoustics, HVAC services what they are and how to incorporate these services along with designing a building. A successful design is the one where the services and functions dealt with simultaneously.

5. Importance of ventilation in making a space comfortable and other factors which contribute to a comfortable space.

There are numerous factors which decide the comfort level of the space. The comfort of the space is decided by factors like air temperature, radiant temperature, relative humidity etc.  Ventilation is an important factor which contributes in making a space more comfortable. Windows and their sizes, different

6. Importance of colour in a space.

The colour of the space often decides the mood of the inhabitants. A space like a room of a house or an hotel should often be vibrant in colour as it would directly impact on the psychology and minds of the inhabitant.

7. Skills like carpentry and properties of other materials.

In an architecture school, the properties of different materials and different techniques that can be used are taught through hands on experience. Skills like carpentry are also developed. Properties of materials like acrylic, Plaster of Paris, clay etc were taught in a way that we students experiment and explore the properties of the materials by applying different techniques and see what results we come up.

8. Evolution of the architectural typologies.

Architecture has evolved over a period of time. Architecture typologies have evolved as counter movements were started by different architects. Few architects contradicted the style of architecture prevalent under a certain movement.
