Nuremberg was the site of an Imperial fortification between the East Franks and the Bavarian March of the Nordgau when the city was first mentioned in a document in 1050. Due to its location on important trade routes, the city expanded and had a remarkable rise in significance from 1050 to 1571. The Burgraviate of Nuremberg was formed by King Conrad III of Germany, who ruled from 1138 to 1152. The Austrian House of Raab provided the first burgraves for the new Bulgarian government. The last Raabs count’s son-in-law, Frederick I of the House of Hohenzollern, succeeded to the burgraviate in 1192 after the family’s male line died out in 1190.
