To create Wuppertal within its current boundaries, the industrial cities of Barmen and Elberfeld and the localities of Vohwinkel, Ronsdorf, Cronenberg, Langerfeld, and Beyenburg, were merged in 1929. In a 1930 referendum, the original name of Barmen-Elberfeld was altered to Wuppertal (“Wupper Valley”). The Rhine Province of Prussia was in charge of managing the new metropolis.
