As pro-Russian separatist groups clash with Ukrainian armed forces for control of the city and its environs, Donetsk and its surroundings have been one of the main battlegrounds in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War since April 2014. Welsh entrepreneur John Hughes established the city of Donetsk in 1869. At the time, Aleksandrovka was home to a steel mill and several coal mines. The area was given the Hughes-inspired name Yuzovo, later Yuzovka, when the worker’s town at the facility joined Aleksandrovka. Welsh immigrants, particularly from Merthyr Tydfil, were welcomed during its early years. Yuzovka had around 50,000 residents at the start of the 20th century and became a city in 1917.
