A military warlord and a powerful Catholic bishop engaged in a power struggle that led to the creation of the modern city of Munich. One of the most dominant German princes of his day was Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Duke of Bavaria, who died in 1195. From the North and Baltic Sea to the Alps, he ruled over enormous swaths of the German Holy Roman Empire. By seizing control of the profitable salt trade that the Catholic Church in Freising controlled, Henry hoped to increase his dominance in Bavaria. Bishop Otto von Freising (d. 1158) was an academic, a historian, and the head of the Freising diocese, which included a sizable portion of Bavaria. To manage the salt trade between Augsburg and Salzburg, Benedictine monks assisted in the construction of a toll bridge and a customs house over the Isar River in the past (perhaps near the present-day town of Oberföhring) (which had existed since Roman times).
