In 1611, Swedish colonists erected Nyenskans, a castle near the mouth of the Neva River that eventually became known as Ingermanland and was home to the Finnic tribe of Ingrians. Nyen, a tiny town, developed around it. Peter the Great, who was interested in seafaring and marine matters, wanted Russia to have a seaport so that it could trade with the rest of Europe at the end of the 17th century. He required a superior harbour than the country’s major port at the time, Arkhangelsk, which was located on the White Sea in the far north and was closed to shipping during the winter.
