Texas-based Huitt-Zollars is a multi-disciplinary engineering and architecture firm with a pan nation presence. Founded in 1975 by Larry Huitt, a structural engineer and Robert Zollars, a civil engineer, this award-winning firm has a rich legacy and a diverse portfolio. Huitt-Zollars offer services such as civil engineering, architecture design, landscape design, construction management, interior design and urban design. Integrity and Quality form the core values of this practice.

1. Zuni Wellness Center  

The Zuni Wellness centre is an integral part of the community in Zuni, New Mexico. The centre is designed to not only function as a fitness establishment but also a space for community engagement. The 20,800 square foot centre was constructed in phases. The first phase involved the construction of an aerobics room, a spinning room and a cardio room. The three spaces have been connected through a common breakout area which is illuminated by natural light. The second phase involved the addition of a basketball court which also functioned as a community gathering/emergency shelter space. The façade has been designed keeping in mind the local architecture and sensibilities.

2. Marriot Marquis Houston  

Located in the convention district of Houston, Texas, Marriot Marquis Convention Centre is a massive 1.1 million square foot building that includes 105,000 square foot of meeting space and a thousand guest rooms. The meeting spaces are linked by a sky bridge to the George R Brown Convention Centre. The sprawling centre is designed as an ‘urban resort’. The convention centre offers amenities like a fitness centre, spa, infinity pool and outdoor function space. A 550 ‘Texas’ lazy pool serves as the main attraction in this centre.

3. Apollo/Saturn V Visitor Center | Huitt-Zollars 

Located in the Kennedy Space centre complex, the Apollo/Saturn V visitor centre is a sprawling 100,000-square-feet space dedicated to telling the history of lunar landings and the Apollo space program. Story narration and visitor interactivity formed an integral aspect of the planning and design of this visitor centre. Presentations, interactive exhibits and displays are some of the tools used for visitor engagement. Saturn V, the largest rocket ever flown is housed in a massive plaza and forms the focal point of the centre. The plaza is surrounded by two theatres and display galleries. The building has been awarded the ‘Themed Entertainment Association Award of Outstanding Achievement’ in the year 1997.

4. Toyota Center   

Located in Houston’s Central Business District, Toyota Centre is a multi-purpose sport and entertainment centre. Home of the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association, this arena is 32 feet below the street level making it the largest lower level arena in the nation. The state-of-the-art establishment consists of retail, restaurants, food courts, a club lounge, concession facilities and administrative offices for the Houston Rockets and Comets. The Toyota Centre has rejuvenated Houston’s business district.

5. Blaze Pizza Flagship Restaurant   

The five thousand square feet restaurant is located in Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort. The 200-seater ‘pizza eatery’ has been modelled after an 1850s sawmill. Open hearth ovens, massive glulam beams and an outdoor patio are the salient features of the design. The patio is characterised by reclaimed wood and saw-dust furniture. The covered patio with the cantilevered roof and slab form the focal point of the Blaze Pizza Flagship restaurant.

6. Legoland Florida   

Legoland, Florida, the largest LEGOLAND theme park in the world is located on the 150-acre site of the erstwhile Cypress Garden Adventure Park. The design of the Legoland theme park took into consideration the history of the site, existing green cover as well as the viability of the existing structures. The concrete from the demolished sidewalks and plaza has been reused to form the base for the new pavement. Adaptive reuse of the structures to fit the new theme is the salient feature of Legoland Florida.

7. Thornton Park Central | Huitt-Zollars  

Thornton Park Central is a mixed-use project designed by Huitt-Zollars located in Orlando, Florida. The project features 20,000 square feet of retail space, a sidewalk café with patio seating, four levels of residential condominiums as well as 328-car park available for the tenants. The north wing of the project consists of 40,000 square feet of office space. This project provides space that caters to both living and working needs. The project overlooks the historic Eola Lake and offers scenic views of downtown Orlando.

8. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic   

Designed and master-planned by Huitt-Zollars; Kelsey-Seybold Clinic’s 260,000 square foot campus is located near Houston’s Texas Medical Centre. The clinic has been designed as a ‘medical mall’ to revitalize the access to health care services. The clinic offers full diagnostic services, a senior and paediatric centre, administrative offices, ambulatory surgical unit and clinics. The clinic overlooks the Garden Park and its huge glass sections offer scenic views.

9. Lone Star College – Energy & Manufacturing Institute 

The Lone Star College-Energy and Manufacturing Institute has been designed by Huitt-Zollars along with Associate Architects Autoarch Architects and Architechnics. The seventy thousand square feet area is a dedicated space for the energy industry’s workforce training. Constructed using steel frames and concrete tilt wall panels, the project comprises twenty-eight classrooms equipped with audiovisual systems, simulation labs, a high bay manufacturing area, quality control lab, machine shops and a faculty suite. The project was awarded the AIA Houston Design Award in 2014.

10. Santa Monica College – Media Center And It Building | Huitt-Zollars

Designed by Huitt-Zollars, the Media Centre and IT building centre was a new addition to Santa Monica College. The design of the media centre and IT building took into consideration the functional requirements, surrounding identities, site context, circulation, views, open spaces and sustainable measures. Sustainable strategies like photovoltaic panels, sun breakers, high-performance glazing, rainwater harvesting and passive ventilation were incorporated into the design to achieve a LEED Gold Certification.

11. San Jacinto College, North Campus – Spencer Building

The renovated ‘Spencer Building’ in the San Jacinto College, North Campus was designed by Huitt-Zollars. The 40,000 square-foot addition includes the student service centre which houses an open computer lab, gathering areas, enrolment services and breakout areas.

12. Virginia Stuller Tatham, Fine Arts Center

Located in River Oaks, Houston, the Virginia Stuller Tatham Fine Arts Centre was a new addition to the St. John’s campus to update the institution’s prestigious fine arts program. Designed by Huitt-Zollars in association with Graham Gund Architects, the 48,000 square foot space is a double-storey structure with 625 seat theatre. The centre program also includes an acting lab, a music library, an outdoor kiln court, dance studios, music practice rooms and rehearsal halls.

13. Madison High School | Huitt-Zollars 

Located in Houston, Texas, Madison High School is a 264,000 square foot project designed by Huitt-Zollars. The facility has been constructed on the school’s existing site and can accommodate 2100 hundred students and faculties. The entrance façade is articulated through vertical bands of concrete, masonry, glazing and translucent panels. The façade also has 38 feet tall metal fins in the colours of the school. The structural system of concrete panels and steel joists is exposed and is visible throughout the building. The facility acts as a vibrant space for the community.

14. Lakeway Senior Living  

Located in Lakeway, Texas, the Lakeway Senior Living is a 161-unit development spread across 135,000 square feet space. The establishment provides assisted living and amenities to senior citizens with varying degrees of abilities. The senior living centre provides various amenities for the Independent Living units such as community spaces, units with outdoor access, resort-style pool deck with cabanas and an outdoor kitchen. The facility also takes care of senior individuals with dementia by providing a separate safe space surrounded by a garden with legacy trees. Built on a sloping site, the design of the living centre incorporated the existing legacy trees on site as well an ecologically sensitive pond. Huitt-Zollars incorporated the elements of local architecture and Mediterranean aesthetics into the exterior of the project.

15. Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, Universal Studios | Huitt-Zollars 

The ‘Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ is a theme park located in the Universal Studios that is set in the world of the globally popular Harry Potter Series. Huitt-Zollars recreated the King’s Cross and Hogsmeade stations which are connected by an elevated train track. The Kings Cross station is a forty thousand square feet replica of the original King’s Cross station in London which includes a glazed barrel-vaulted ceiling.
