It inspires the architecture world, with its rich social heritage, unique art, and cultural practices representing the traditional Indian style. One of the most beautiful and lively states showcases a distinctive architectural style that not only captivates the visitors of India but also mesmerises foreign visitors.  The state of Rajasthan expresses a fine transition from the magnificent forts that reflect the history to the rich havelis that continue to enhance the legacy of the place.

Understanding the Past

Rajasthan’s architecture is a pleasing composition of the Rajput, Mughal, and Hindu architecture styles from the ancient period to the 21st century. The captivating journey of its architecture is a painting that exhibits cultural influences, technological innovations, and artistic glitter. The traditions are always lost with innovations and inventions but the ancient roots of Rajasthan’s architecture soar high in the facades of historical monuments and forts with glimpses of early building techniques and urban planning of the region. 

The city of Rajasthan has experienced numerous architectural interventions with the change of dynasties from the early mediaeval period in the 8th Century to the Colonial times in the 19th century and the Early Medieval period marked the beginning of the existence of Hindu architecture that incorporated intricate stone carvings, huge mandapas, and the tall shikhara. One can look at the Harshat Mata temple at Abhaneri to understand the captivating presence of Hindu architecture.

The end of the Mediaeval period began the reign of the Rajputs who imbued an inerasable mark on the landscape of Rajasthan’s architecture. During The period Rajputs witnessed the building of one of the finest features of the city, the palaces, and havelis that reflect the competence and cultural influence of the rulers of Rajputs. The Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur and Amber Fort in Jaipur demonstrate the grandness and impressive skillmanship of the period Rajputs.

Rajasthan was under the rule of the Mughals during the 16th century. This influence of the Mughals assisted in evolving the architecture with the creation of fusion architecture. It beautifully combines Rajput architecture and Mughal Architecture to form exquisite structures. Fatehpur Sikri is one of the fine examples that reflects the period of Mughal architecture. Lastly, the beginning of colonial rule brought visible changes in the city by incorporating British and Victorian styles in its structures. Today, the architecture of Rajasthan beautifully embraces all the remnants of its rich history while fulfilling the demands of the 21st century. 

Reflection of Architecture of Rajasthan

Rajasthan is a lively state that reflects its distinctive architectural style around the globe. The rich heritage has inspired architects, designers, and artists across several cities and states. The unique palatial residences, a fusion of different styles, and vibrant decors with local materials have become a concept of architectural design for hotels to represent luxury and royalty. Its architecture assists in creating visually striking and culturally resonant structures. One of the significant architectural characteristics i.e. the innate ornamentation on the facades of the structures and the Jharokha are the most imitated elements around the world, that allow people to experience the city of Rajasthan uniquely. Let us delve into the some of the examples of how Rajasthan’s architecture has influenced around the globe:

Hearst Castle, California

The Hearst Castle was built during the 19th century. The castle was inspired by the famous Neemrana Fort Palace of Rajasthan with its intricate carvings, open courtyards, and fusion of architectural styles. The interiors as well as exteriors echo the grandness and richness of the fort palace with terrace gardens and ornamented interiors that captivate the visitors.

Alhambra, Spain

Alhambra, the palace of the Moorish monarchs of Granada in Spain parallels the Amber fort in Jaipur with its majestic spaces, panoramic views, and architectural intricacy. Both considered to be architectural marvels have created a fusion of Islamic, Rajput, and Mughal styles resonating with the distinctive architectural style of Rajasthan.

Islamic Garden of Morocco

The Gardens of Morocco are deeply inspired by one of the architectural wonders of Rajasthan, the step-wells such as Chand Baori in Abhaneri. The Islamic Gardens of Morocco resemble step-wells due to the similar geometric patterns and symmetrical Mughal designs. The harmonious blend of planning and landscaping reflects the aesthetics of the architectural design of Rajasthan.
