In the past, Kolkata’s walls were battlegrounds for political graffiti, caricatures, slogans, and ideological battles adorned each corner. However, over time, artists extended their palette. Nowadays, street art envelops an assorted extent of subjects on these urban canvases, past legislative issues, social issues, environmental concerns, and daily life encounters. Kolkata’s walls presently tell stories of strength, sympathy, and shared humanity.

Graffiti in Kolkata: Historical Viewpoint 

During the 1970s people started seeing Graffiti as a major art form in New York, even after being there for centuries. Youthful individuals, particularly from minority communities, started utilizing graffiti techniques for murals and tags on buildings and subways. This new form of spray painting was seen as a way to express oneself and challenge the status quo.

Graffiti soon spread to other cities globally, including Kolkata. The primary graffiti in Kolkata showed up within the early 1980s, and it was mostly political in nature. Specialists utilized graffiti to protest against government corruption and social treachery. Within the 1990s, spray painting in Kolkata started to take on a more artistic form. Specialists have begun utilizing distinctive techniques and colors to make more visually engaging wall paintings. They too started to explore diverse topics, such as mythology, nature, and social commentary. Today, graffiti is a flourishing art form in Kolkata.
