Detail. View from the elevators. The plaza’s oval concrete paving takes its cues from the wider South Australian landscape with the patterns being reminiscent of dryer graphic landscapes as experienced from the air. (Photographer: Ben Wrigley)

Watercourse takes its inspiration from the creeks that lace through this often parched environment and acts as a poignant reminder of the life-affirming presence of water. The arc form straddles the paving types and is in conversation with the pedestrian bridge above. (Photographer: Lyndon Stacey)

Watercourse, Detail. The patterning and forms of the interior of the granite waterfeature are reminiscent of how water carves the sand and rock of creek beds as it pulses, gushes or meanders on a journey of least resistance.

The interplay of light, sound and water subtly activate and enliven the forecourt plaza space to the Adelaide International Airport, acting as a soothing, welcoming space for airport users.

Landscaping forms a major part of the project, with plantings of indigenous and Australian natives used purposefully throughout all the new civil work areas, providing biological diversity. WSUD has been incorporated with planted swales cleansing water runoff and large areas of planting ameliorating the extremes of climactic conditions throughout the seasons. TCL worked closely with AAL ensuring the plantings maximized green infrastructure while not detrimentally affecting airport safety, selecting vegetation that did not allow particular species of birds or large numbers of birds to colonise the area.

The Plaza and integrated water feature is designed functionally keeping in line with the requirements of an International Airport Terminal.
