Kemerovo, a fusion of several ancient Russian communities, is their successor. On a route leading from Tomsk to the Kuznetsk stronghold, a waypoint known as Verkhotomsky ostrog was built in 1657. On the left bank of the Tom, a settlement named Shcheglovsk was established in 1701 and quickly developed into a community. Whereas Kemerovo was named in 1734, seven villages were present there by 1859: Shcheglovka (or Ust-Iskitimskoye), Yevseyevo, Krasny Yar, Kur-Iskitim (Pleshki), Davydovo (Ishanovo), and Borovaya. Coal was found in the area around 1721. In 1907, the first coal mines were built, and a chemical facility followed in 1916. Shcheglovo’s population had increased to about 4,000 people by 1917.
