In the past, there was a location called Budorigum at or close to the location of Wroclaw. It was already depicted on Claudius Ptolemy’s map from AD 142-147. During the migration, there were settlements in the region starting in the sixth century. A West Slavic tribe known as the Lans settled along the Oder River and built a fortified gordon Ostrów Tumski. The Via Regia and the Amber Road were two crucial commercial routes where Wrocaw first appeared. Due to the stronghold of the Bohemian duke Vratislav I there, the city was first known as Vratislavia in the 10th century. Vratislavia was polonized into Wroclaw after Duke Mieszko I of Poland invaded Silesia in 985. The town was mentioned explicitly in 1000 AD in connection with its promotion to an episcopal see during the Congress of Gniezno.
