Colen Donck, a 24,000-acre (97 square kilometres) Dutch land grant, historically included the ground on which the city is now situated. It extended 12 miles (19 km) north from Marble Hill, which marks the modern border between Manhattan and the Bronx, and east along the Hudson River to the Bronx River. Adriaen van der Donck, the patron of Colendonck, received the territory in July 1645. Locally, people referred to Van der Donck as the Jonkheer or Jonker (etymologically, “young gentleman,” deriving from the old Dutch jong (young) and heer (“lord”); effectively, “Esquire”). The name “Yonkers” is directly derived from this term. Near Nepperhan Creek and the Hudson meet, Van der Donck constructed a sawmill.
