The Lenape, a group of Native American tribes, lived in the region that is now Jersey City (later called Delaware Indian). Henry Hudson anchored his small ship Halve Maen (English: Half Moon) at Sandy Hook, Harsimus Cove, Weehawken Cove, and other locations along what was eventually called the North River in 1609 while looking for a different way to get to East Asia. He spent nine days exploring the area and getting to know the locals before setting sail for Albany. A version of the Dutch Prince’s Flag serves as the city’s current flag. The city seal, which features the Half Moon, a ship built by Henry Hudson, and other contemporary ships, is displayed in the centre of the blue, white, and yellow tricolour flag.
