According to archaeological discoveries, the Reno area was the prehistoric Martis people’s eastern boundary. A few settlers first appeared in the Truckee Meadows, a vibrant valley through which the Truckee River flowed from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake in the middle of the 1850s. The California Trail, which followed the Truckee westward before diverging towards Donner Lake, where the problematic Sierra Nevada hurdle started, provided these early settlers with additional income in addition to subsistence farming. A small mining village sprung up after gold was found in Virginia City in 1850, but when silver was found at the Comstock Lode in 1859, it sparked a mining boom, and hundreds of people fled their homes.
