Cahuilla and Serrano people lived in the area in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Californians like Bernardo Yorba and Juan Bandini developed ranches during the early nineteenth century. Louis Prevost founded the California Silk Center Association in the 1860s as a short-lived sericulture project. Following its demise, John W. North bought some of the lands and established the Southern California Colony Association to encourage the area’s development. North issued posters advertising the foundation of a California colony in March 1870. Northfield, Minnesota, was founded by North, a fervent temperance abolitionist from New York State. Riverside was a temperance advocate who was a Republican. Riverside had four saloons when it was founded. The license rates were raised until the saloons left Riverside. Investors from England and Canada brought traditions and activities popular among the wealthy to the United States. As a result, Riverside became home to southern California’s first golf course and polo field.
