Friar Junpero Serra called the place Vallejo de Santa Ana after Gaspar de Portolá’s expedition out of Mexico City, then the capital of New Spain, in 1769. (Valley of Saint Anne, or Santa Ana Valley). Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in this valley on November 1, 1776. Jose Antonio Yorba, a Spanish army sergeant, was granted territory that he named Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana in 1810, the first year of the Mexican War of Independence. Yorba’s rancho comprised today’s Olive, Orange, Irvine, Yorba Linda, Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa, and unincorporated El Modena, as well as Santa Ana Heights. Under Spanish rule, this rancho was the only land grant in Orange County. Following Mexican independence, the new government gave surrounding land grants in Orange County.
