Buffalo experienced a period of exceptional prosperity during the 1890s and the 1910s, which attracted renowned architects like H.H. Richardson, Louis Sullivan, and Frank Lloyd Wright to create significant structures in the city. One of the earliest steel-framed skyscrapers in the country was Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building (1895), located in the downtown business centre, which marked a significant turning point in the development of American design. On a huge 100-acre complex built by landscape architects Olmsted and Vaux, who also created the city’s enormous park system, H.H. Richardson created the massive Buffalo State Asylum (1880) on the northern outskirts of the city in what would become his trademark Richardsonian Romanesque style (1868-1896).
