Fukuoka was once the home of the powerful daimyo of Chikuzen Province, and it played a significant role in Japan’s medieval history. During the Boshin War of 1868, the district’s renowned Tokugawa Ieyasu temple was devastated by fire.
On April 1, 1889, the former cities of Hakata and Fukuoka merged to establish the current metropolis. Hakata was historically the port and merchant district and was more identified with the area’s culture. It is still the primary commercial district today.
On the other hand, the Fukuoka area was home to many samurai. Its name has been used since Kuroda Nagamasa, the first daimyo of Chikuzen Province, named it after his hometown in Okayama Prefecture. The “ancient Fukuoka” is today known as Tenjin.
