The land occupied by Bauru was historically a disputed territory between two Indigenous groups: the Kaingang and the Guaran. Ethnic Brazilian pioneers sought to establish in the Sao Paulo region in the eighteenth century, which served as a crossing place for the monçes (river expeditions) that ran through Mato Grosso and Goiás, but were thwarted by attacks from local indigenous. Non-Indians only were able to settle in the region in the nineteenth century, when people from the coast of Sao Paulo, as well as the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, arrived. Pioneers from Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais began exploring the vast region between the Serra de Botucatu, Tietê River, Paranapanema River, and Paraná River, which had previously been inhabited by Kaingang indigenous populations, about 1850, in quest of additional land for occupancy and colonization.
