Through various good works, Architects in St. Catharines have been trying to make the city look better. The Mississaugas Indigenous people named what is now known as 12 Mile Creek “Ashquasing,” which means “that which is at the end” in the Anishinaabe language. St. Catharines is located in this traditional area. In the 1780s, Loyalists were the first to settle in the area. The Crown awarded land in exchange for services and losses in the United States. Serjeant Jacob Dittrick and Private John Hainer, formerly Butler’s Rangers, are said to have been among the first to arrive in the area. They obtained their Crown Patents near the confluence of Dick’s Creek and 12 Mile Creek, which is now the heart of St. Catharines. Dick’s Creek was named after Richard Pierpoint, a Black Loyalist and formerly enslaved American, according to some local St. Catharine’s historians, although this has never been proven. Native trails supplied transportation networks in addition to waterways, resulting in the current radial road plan from the city centre. Between 1787 and 1789, the surrounding country was surveyed, and Townships were established.
