Nara was the capital of Japan at the time of the Nara period from 710 to 794 as the seat of the dynasty, before the capital was moved to Kyoto. Nara is home to Heijō Palace and Kasugayama Primeval Forest. The city has historic monuments of ancient Nara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ruler Shōmu requested the development of the Tōdai-Ji Temple (the world’s biggest wooden structure) and the world’s most monster bronze Buddha sculpture. The sanctuaries of Nara are referred to as the Nanto Shichi Daiji, subsequently providing Nara with an equivalent of Nanto, “the Southern Capital”.
