When we talk about human intelligence, many other synonyms may come to mind – one of them being creativity. Many people think that a high IQ automatically means that a person has high creativity. Others, however, prefer to say that creativity is a gift that is completely independent of intelligence. Who is right? What does science say?
What is intelligence and how is it measured?
Intelligence is generally defined as how efficiently and quickly a person can think, solve problems and process new information. Intelligence can be measured in different ways, but the most common tool is the iq test online. This online test summarises state-of-the-art techniques that give the most accurate possible indication of a person’s IQ level. As intelligence cannot be defined by one ability, it is important that the test looks at different areas:
- Logical reasoning – How well can you make connections?
- Problem solving skills – How quickly can you find effective solutions?
- Spatial intelligence – How do you perceive visual information?
- Language skills – How rich is your vocabulary and how well can you formulate complex ideas?
If you want to know your own intelligence level, take the test and find out what your IQ level is!
What is creativity and how is it measured?
Creativity is generally defined as ‘the ability to think in new ideas and innovative ways’. So creativity is not necessarily a fixed trait in a person, but rather a skill that can be developed. But what is a creative person like?
A creative person has the ability to approach problems in an original, unconventional way, to explore connections and to think outside the box. A creative person can find solutions where others, searching for logical solutions, cannot. However, creativity is harder to define and harder to measure than intelligence. Some researchers suggest that divergent thinking tests (which measure the number and originality of an individual’s ideas) can help.
But IQ tests measure IQ levels much more accurately than divergent thinking tests measure creativity in an individual.
Is high IQ related to creativity?
Of course, there has been a lot of research on the subject, with contradictory results. But overall, we can say that high IQ is related to creativity up to a certain level, but not in all cases. One interesting theory is that there is a “threshold effect”:
After a certain IQ level (above about 120), the link between creativity and intelligence weakens.
High IQ does not guarantee creativity, but it can help someone to better understand complex problems and find solutions to them more effectively.
But history is full of examples of brilliant minds combining intelligence and creativity. Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and Nikola Tesla were not only intelligent, but also had highly creative minds that made them special in their own spheres.
Can creativity and intelligence be developed?
Of course, both can be developed, as even skills that are not practised are weakened. So, to develop creativity, we suggest that you try to learn new things, such as a new language, a new art form, or even the basics of car mechanics or photography. In fact, whatever you learn will develop your creativity and the way your brain works. As well as learning, you can also develop your creativity through association games, and even just by sitting down to brainstorm about a particular topic and coming up with a routine or solution on your own.
To increase your intelligence, we can also say that regular studying and reading can develop it, as can practising logical and mathematical tasks. If you are not good at maths, it is worth trying to develop critical thinking skills, for example reading online news and trying to filter the information and figure out which news is fake and which is real. This is just one example, there are many other ways to develop critical thinking and intelligence in general.
Summary
As this article has shown, there is a correlation between intelligence and creativity, but it is not always possible to say 100%. A high IQ can help solve problems quickly, while creativity is more about new approaches and original thinking. However, a high IQ does not mean that a person is creative, nor can a creative person always be said to have a high IQ.
If you want to get to know yourself better, you can use Cerebrum’s IQ test to find out how much IQ you have and what skills you should pay attention to developing. Remember, you can improve any skill, it’s just a matter of practice!
