Nestled gently into the forested slopes of Wayanad, this home emerges as a quiet presence woven into the landscape. It is a return—a return to nature, to simplicity and to self. The
clients, having travelled the world, envisioned a sanctuary that harmonizes contemporary
needs with the timeless embrace of the forest. Their search brought them here, to a home
that reflects years of evolving personal philosophy and a deep-seated desire to live in sync
with nature.
Project Name: The Abode in the Woods
Studio Name: Buildnext Construction Solutions Ltd

Built on difficult terrain that demanded a sensitive approach, the residence aligns itself with the natural contours, embracing the land rather than imposing upon it. It rises softly, as though it has always belonged, offering a pause in the wilderness—a space for reflection,
stillness and connection.

The design listens to the land. Three distinct blocks rest on the slope, linked by a Central
Courtyard that serves as a transition zone. This open space, with its exposed laterite walls
and coir-draped ceiling, is more than a passage; it is a place of pause and contemplation. At
its heart, a generous skylight filters soft sunlight, casting ever-changing shadows that
connect the inhabitants to the passing day. Here, light is not merely an accessory; it is a
living element that animates the space and deepens the experience of time.

The exterior is marked by a restrained elegance that contrasts yet harmonizes with the
dense green of the surrounding forest. Large windows and open balconies frame panoramic
views, inviting the wilderness to participate in everyday life. The house is elevated along
subtle levels that follow the natural gradient, ensuring minimal disruption to the forest floor and reinforcing the architecture’s deep respect for its setting.

Materials are chosen not for style but for their connection to the place. Mulluvenga, a
locally sourced medicinal tree, provides both durability and symbolic depth. This sacred
woodreflects a design ethos rooted in healing, sustainability and local wisdom. These
choices are not merely aesthetic; they are a dialogue with the land, a conversation that
honors the place’s history and spirit.

Inside, the house embraces an open layout where the boundaries between Living, Dining
and Kitchen dissolve into one another, creating a sense of spatial fluidity. The Lounge looks outward to the forest, reinforcing a seamless continuity between the indoors and the
outdoors.
