To maximize the potential of an oversized lot in Buffalo’s West Village Historic District, the Vining House creates a tranquil sanctuary just off Niagara Street’s bustling commercial stretch.
Project Name: Vining House
Studio Name: Arch&Type

Nestled between a neighboring two-story home and a three-story apartment building, the house artfully utilizes its compact space with a crescent-shaped patio while maintaining a rectilinear form, highlighted by a continuous, offset biophilic cable trellis.

The street-facing façade respectfully engages with its historic surroundings while embracing a contemporary design. The gable’s slope mirrors the adjacent home’s, and punched windows accentuate the vining plant supports, blending tradition with modernity. More importantly, the Vining House fulfills a deeper need of the human spirit: even indoors, residents are connected to nature.

The transparent crescent wall offers views of a secluded garden where ivy and morning glories climb, softly screening the home and fostering a sense of serenity. Inside, the living room, kitchen, and dining area align along the crescent wall of windows. The second-floor hallway, curving along the crescent, leads to two bedrooms and a full bathroom. While the bedrooms are deliberately separated from the garden, morning light invites a connection with nature through two punched windows framing the vibrant vines outside.

This modest home thrives on simplicity, offering a balanced, understated architecture that celebrates a life intertwined with nature. The Vining House is more than a dwelling; it’s a testament to living harmoniously with the natural world, even in the city’s heart.
