When the owner of a three-bedroom apartment in the heart of Moscow invited interior designer Victoria Sklyarenko to create a new design, it marked the beginning of a unique transformation. The gallery owner, who spends most of her time in the United States and traveling around Europe, was charmed by the apartment’s location and stunning panoramic views of the city. Her exquisite taste is evident in the seamless integration of a contemporary art collection with custom-designed furniture. For example, the living room features designated spaces for an interesting sculpture and a three-dimensional painting. She actively participated in the development of furniture designs, the selection of finishing materials, and even in the creation of a custom carpet featuring her name in the design.

The initial layout of the 110 m² apartment perfectly suited the client’s needs. Since her children had grown up and moved abroad, the focus was on creating a single, thoughtfully designed bedroom. Despite the space constraints, a functional vanity area with a mirror was integrated, crafting a cozy nook for beauty and relaxation. The apartment also features a multifunctional home office that serves as a guest room when needed. It’s equipped with a specially designed sofa that easily converts into a comfortable full-size bed.

Recognizing the client’s desire for a spacious wardrobe, a 15-square-meter area was allocated for it, complete with a small console for items near the entrance. “The design of the kitchen presented a challenge,” Sklyarenko notes. “We struggled to find a manufacturer who could produce the brass elements for the bar area in the desired shade, so we ended up designing the kitchen set ourselves.”

The client’s lifestyle and occupation served as the project’s inspiration. The apartment became a showcase for new art pieces and a relaxation space. The main motif in the interior is modern style with American Art Deco influences, but there’s also a strong Parisian atmosphere.

Decorative techniques were used to overcome the challenge of the low ceiling height. “We placed a cornice practically on the ceiling and painted it in the same color as the walls to visually elongate the space,” Victoria explains. The client suggested using wallpaper as accents, a concept Sklyarenko liked. They covered decorative panels above the chest of drawers with natural materials, foil, and mother-of-pearl plates, adding to the classic elegance of the project.

Most of the furniture was specifically designed for the interior. “The exception was the upholstered furniture, including vintage decor and a unique sculpture by C’Jere. I found a chair for the home office in France and decided not to change its original leather, only slightly restoring the glossy lacquer,” Victoria Sklyarenko shares. She takes particular pride in the designer chest of drawers in the living room, inspired by the client’s eventful life. “We wanted to show the volume of the marquetry, so we angled the details and used pearlescent liquid lacquer to achieve a special effect.”

Victoria Sklyarenko concludes, “This project was a true reflection of the client’s dynamic lifestyle. Every custom element brought out the distinct character of her Moscow residence, creating a space that’s not only aesthetically pleasing but also a testament to her vibrant life.”
