This is the story of a residence, built for gatherings and designed for generations, where elegance hosts every celebration, and family is always at the heart of design. Located in Gangashaher in Bikaner, and sprawling across 4,625 sq. ft., this home is crafted for a family of seven (four daughters, a son, a husband, and a wife). Ar. Rajkumar Kumawat brings in a design language with an emphasis on designing with the essence of luxury; with climate-responsive and social interactions, the home captivates the occupant with a communal design.

Zoned with two distinct areas – one for public mobility and the other for private purposes – the design serves as a whole without impeding efficiency. The ground level, which has a swimming pool, a party space, a gym, a massage corner, steam, a sauna, a salon, and a trying room, is exclusively used for gathering for business, play, and relaxation. The first floor of the home has a living room, kitchen and dining area, bedrooms, a guest room, a terrace garden, and a home theatre and extends to the third floor.

The main entrance, is composed of a Sagar black butch work wall. While the integration of stone and wooden panels reinforces the facade’s architectural language as one of the project’s central elements, the jaalis give the house a sense of ornamentation. The overall structure follows a language of bold lines and precise geometry. To highlight and complement the city’s dune gusts, the facade’s colour scheme is intentionally kept earthy. In response to the severe, arid climate of the area, the urban form celebrates its architectural heritage.

Stepping indoors, the living room captures attention with stone-clad wall features and a mural depicting the skylines of the nations the family has visited. A wall including religious wisdom chants and a transcribed poem penned by the daughters on the essence of the home and its sensory elements make the home a haven of warmth and tranquility. Additionally, to improve a sense of privacy, the design includes perforated screens, allowing views only from inside. Exploring further, the space includes the dining, lounging, and kitchen. Its arrangement and design language exemplify current maximalism and classic sophistication. With double-height ceilings and expansive areas, the home is flooded with natural lighting, connections, and ventilation throughout.

The bedrooms, which are furnished with Italian marble floors, are private havens. The room’s ambiance encourages one to relax and unwind in style with block-printed linens in serene pastel hues. Each person’s individuality is reflected in the bedroom interiors and furniture, which are designed to meet the individual needs and work styles. In every room, the predominant colour is rooted in the idea of coolness and calmness, which are accomplished in a variety of static, temporary, and festive areas.

The essence of socialisation is implemented with home theatre sets, a close-knit celebration area, and a lovely garden on the third floor that blends seamlessly with the house’s private settings. Additionally, an outside covered landscape terrace with a mandir that embodies local workmanship sits on the front edge of the living space. To keep the dust from entering the home, a mint stone is used to screen this terrace from the front.
