In the bustling Breach Candy neighborhood of Mumbai, a 2800-square-foot loft apartment called Meherbaan has been dramatically transformed by designer Niharika Saraf. The space, previously a dilapidated structure ravaged by termites, underwent a complete reconstruction. Originally part of an ocean-facing building with impressive double-height ceilings, the apartment required a total reimagining from scratch.
Project Name: Meherbaan
Studio Name: Polka House

Saraf’s design approach centered on creating a serene and harmonious living environment. The color palette features soft, muted tones of cream, off-white, and beige, deliberately contrasting with Mumbai’s vibrant urban landscape. These understated colors serve as a peaceful sanctuary, offering visual relief from the city’s sensory intensity.

The core design philosophy emphasized fluidity and interconnectedness. Rather than creating distinct, segregated spaces, Saraf envisioned an environment where areas seamlessly transition into one another. Movement through the apartment feels organic, with furniture and architectural elements carefully positioned to encourage a natural, uninterrupted flow. Even the stairs were designed to be more than just a functional element, serving as an additional relaxation spot that connects seamlessly with the mezzanine.
Material selection played a crucial role in maintaining the apartment’s cohesive aesthetic. Consistent vineyard wood was used throughout, while black hardware and sliding windows provided subtle definition without disrupting the overall continuity. Natural elements like snake plants and filtered sunlight were strategically incorporated, particularly in spaces like the bathroom, which became a light-filled, private retreat.

Texture became another critical design element, with a uniform concrete-texture finish applied across walls, floors, and ceilings. This approach created a unified, tactile environment that makes the entire space feel interconnected. Rustic, repurposed wooden beams added character and a subtle connection to the building’s original structure.
The apartment’s design also prioritized adaptability, catering to a young, dynamic lifestyle. The mezzanine includes a concealed bar for entertainment, while the main living area supports multiple simultaneous activities without feeling crowded or disjointed. Each piece of furniture serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, contributing to the overall design narrative.

Ultimately, Meherbaan represents more than just a renovation—it’s a reimagining of urban living. Niharika Saraf has created a fluid, flexible space that transcends traditional architectural boundaries, offering an immersive environment that seamlessly adapts to its inhabitant’s changing needs and moments.
