Saumitra’s journey into the world of architecture commenced in his eighth grade, sparked by the influential presence of his childhood friend’s father—a distinguished landscape architect. Entranced by the profession’s intricacies, coupled with his inherent artistic aptitude nurtured since his early years, Saumitra’s path naturally converged towards a career in architecture. Meanwhile, Sharmin Wade found her wellspring of inspiration in her father, a seasoned architect boasting an illustrious 35-year tenure in the industry. The formidable expertise and accomplishments she witnessed from a tender age catalysed her unwavering fascination with the design domain.
After earning his architectural degree from LS Raheja School of Architecture in 2019, Saumitra embarked on his professional path by joining Lodha Developers. Driven by a strong desire to gain comprehensive knowledge of the industry, he eagerly immersed himself in understanding the inner workings and thought processes of a developer. As time went on, his passion and curiosity grew, ultimately leading him to establish his own real estate firm in 2017, where he could apply his accumulated insights and knowledge. In a similar vein, Sharmin also completed her architecture degree from LS Raheja School of Architecture in 2019, solidifying her expertise in the field. She commenced her career as a Junior Architect at The Canvas and subsequently served as a Consultant Architect at Ajay Wade Associates. Prior to these engagements, she gained valuable experience through an internship with Vivek Bhole Architects, further expanding her practical knowledge and understanding of architectural practices. Notably, Saumitra and Sharmin, who happened to be batchmates during their time at the Architecture School, discovered a shared synergy while collaborating on a competition proposal and a restaurant design. Their aligned visions and complementary working styles eventually prompted them to establish a firm together, recognising the potential of their collective abilities and shared aspirations.
In July 2020, Studio SB was established, coinciding with their acquisition of the inaugural commercial project, titled ‘News Danka’, for a close acquaintance. This particular undertaking posed a significant challenge due to its economic nature and the prevailing circumstances of the pandemic. The task involved designing a 900-square-foot office space, and despite the constraints, the team completed the site within a remarkable timeframe of just 20 days. Following the completion of their initial project, Studio SB faced a setback with the halt of two subsequent projects, which even made them contemplate the possibility of closing the firm. However, a significant turning point occurred when they secured three large-scale projects, marking a pivotal moment that changed their trajectory. Since then, they have never looked back, and are currently engaged in the design of an impressive 50 lakhs square feet.
The design approach of the duo has consistently been characterised by dynamism and adaptability, as they continuously seek out innovations without being confined to any specific methodology or approach. At Studio SB, Saumitra spearheads the design and execution processes of architecture projects with his comprehensive understanding of the field. Meanwhile, Sharmin takes charge of luxury interiors, infusing her distinctive style and attention to detail to create opulent and aesthetically pleasing spaces.
Their success story is a testament to their resilience and determination, refusing to let go and persevering in the face of challenges. Both of them regard their fathers as their most influential mentors, who have supported and guided them at every step of their lives.
