Interior designer Shreenu Mukherjee was first commissioned by Ritu Kalra to craft the interior of a café in 2015—now known as Koko Pizzeria. The project’s resounding success led the Kalra family to once again seek Shreenu’s expertise, this time for their new 3,500-square-foot condominium in Gurugram.
The client’s brief was simple: they desired a comfortable and functional home crafted from natural materials, with robust detailing for longevity. Trusting in Shreenu’s vision and expertise, the family granted her complete creative freedom, encouraging her to approach the project with a ‘carte blanche’. Over the course of a year and a half, this freedom allowed the design process to evolve organically, resulting in a space that embodies the signature aesthetic of her design firm, The Vrindavan Project.
Shreenu Mukherjee’s design philosophy revolves around exploring the possibilities of ‘style and luxury’ through a lens of ‘conscious awareness’. This philosophy is palpable in the interiors she has crafted—a seamless blend of elegance, comfort, and luxury. The colour palette, dominated by warm beige, sets a serene tone for the entire space, while bright accents and a rich mix of textures invite admiration and exploration.
“Manifesting elegant spaces with unique elements and meticulous attention to detail is the driving force behind The Vrindavan Project’s evolving design language,” Shreenu explains. This condominium is a testament to that philosophy, serving as a state-of-the-art example of maximal minimalism. The space is adorned with luxurious products and accessories, each thoughtfully selected to complement the natural, hand-crafted materials that define the environment.
The commitment to sustainability is at the heart of The Vrindavan Project. From the beginning, Shreenu made conscious decisions to ensure that the design was ecologically sensitive and sustainable. Stone, sourced locally from naturally occurring marbles, granites, and sandstones, is used extensively throughout the space. With its rough, smooth, and polished textures, the stone adds a sense of time and permanence to the design. Its thermal mass and density provide efficient insulation, making the home comfortable year-round.
The extensive woodwork in the residence is crafted from indigenously sourced timber, reinforced with metal components, and secured with heavy-duty hardware by local artisans. By avoiding prefabrication and factory-made modular elements, the project not only achieved a unique, hand-crafted quality but also supported social sustainability by employing a vast team of skilled craftsmen and technicians.
Furniture and furnishings were selectively procured from industries committed to corporate social responsibility, ensuring that every element in the home aligns with The Vrindavan Project’s ethical standards. The result is a harmonious blend of contrasts—where subtly opposing forces are woven together to create a unique, tranquil expression.
“Spirituality is at the core of our professional work ethic,” says Shreenu. “For us, maintaining a sense of calm and balance through a restrained approach to design is fundamental.” This ethos is evident in every project by The Vrindavan Project, where sustainability, ecological sensitivity, and contextual appropriateness are always at the forefront.
In this Gurugram residence, Shreenu Mukherjee has not only crafted a home but has also created a living embodiment of her design philosophy—a space where luxury, sustainability, and consciousness coexist in perfect harmony.
