Having returned from Bali, enamoured with its lush tropical landscapes, the clients commissioned us to renovate their small courtyard garden in Bermondsey South East London and turn it into a luxuriant haven.
Project Name: Bermondsey Courtyard Garden
Studio Name: Mylandscapes LTD

Grey limestone & Ipe hardwood create a modern floor expanse, enveloped by hardy tropical floras, with Palm trees, Japanese Maple, Jasmine, Ferns and Yellow & Black Bamboos.

The main feature is offset to the right, in the shape of a raised long water pool with 3 fountains. The main flow cascades down to create white noise to dampen the nearby urban traffic noise. A palm tree is set afloat close to the water chute, featured in a submerged planter. The brick wall enveloping the pool was left natural, clothed by an old Wisteria. Contrasting this texture, the other 2 courtyard walls were rendered smooth and painted in a light grey colour. A raised bed continues on the same level of the pool, top clad in Ipe hardwood to serve as a perch.

The main planting bed takes off this height, yet increases in height to create an architectural throne for the Japanese Maple. For our highly sociable clients, this capacious layout and evergreen planting scheme enable both year-round focal interest from the adjacent kitchen & upstairs windows, as well as ample space to entertain large groups of guests.
