At the end phase of their extensive house renovation, our clients enlisted our help to design & build their 3 outdoor spaces. The living room extension had added a new roof terrace above, a back garden and a front one too.

The view from the roof terrace benefits the master bedroom, where the entire garden is revealed in its landscape position backdropped by the mature trees of a leafy neighbourhood. The garden continues the interior in an indoor-outdoor fashion, flowing the wooden floor into hardwood Ipe decking.

The indoor fireplace was reiterated in the design of the bespoke corner garden bench, having a generous cavity, warmly lit. Our clients’ love of water was echoed in the granite waterfall offset to the right. The waterfall facade is gently angled, where 4 pieces of granite alternate between honed and flamed finishes, increasing in size till reaching a pool which cascades into the ground basin.

Architectural plants include many multi-stemmed specimens, from Eucalyptus to Arbutus, Birch and Palm trees. Diverse Bamboo species, ferns & perennials are grown in inverted raised beds. These structures were not backfilled with soil but left hollow to enable a dramatic effect of stems emanating from the base which is particularly effective when lit.

The raised beds are set afloat atop deep recesses which create an architectural shadow gap which lightens their appearance. We detailed an 8mm gap recess between the rendered walls of the beds and the coping stone, balancing the bottom recess.

The smooth buff sandstone was quarried at an unusual size of 900mm x 300mm, creating a sleek patio which occupies two thirds while an Ipe deck contrasts it. Offsetting this linearity, a corner curved bed, tiered into three heights, features a lush jungle of foliage plants, punctuated by Silver Birch trees. The roof terrace features bespoke unique aperture planters where Agapanthus is grown, delicately veiling the garden. Olive trees frame the door, while Pittosporum provides an evergreen privacy hedge on the street side.
