The 2-year renovation of this Fulham townhouse culminated in the creation of 4 unique outdoor spaces: a courtyard garden, roof terrace, atrium & front garden. Photos by Clive Nichols. The 36-sqm courtyard is laid around a central focal point waterfall. The concrete outline is offset to the left with a textured granite face, where water cascades gently into a pebble pool. Lighting is a key element of this urban courtyard garden.

A semi-cantilevered corner bench is clad in hardwood, floating above LED lighting. This part of the garden is anchored by a raised bed with a deep recessed plinth which creates a dramatic shadow gap.

The sunny left side of the garden features a desert Willow and Mexican lilies, while the shaded right side is home to tall bamboo which screens the neighbours.

The walls have all been rendered smooth, with cedar slatted privacy screens on top. Downlights create alluring silhouettes generated by modern sculpture.

2 large transparent turquoise pots flank the doors, emitting internal lighting, planted with lush architectural Phormium (New Zealand Flax)

Left of the waterfall is a statuesque, perfumed Paperbush, contrasted on the right with a multi-stemmed Full Moon Maple, both underplanted by Sweet Flags. The adjacent kitchen flooring tiles were continued into the courtyard in the same size, pattern and level, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor connection. Both tiled sections are intermittently connected by a hardwood deck which leads the eye to generate more depth.
