Created in 2008, this courtyard garden was remade into a green wall when reduced by half by the same clients by extending their house to make a swimming pool in 2019. Photos: Marianne Majerus.

North-facing and suppressed by massive walls, the shaded space is a modern Japanese courtyard, with 3 Japanese Maples, many Ferns, Lilyturf & statuesque Temple Bamboo. The Bamboo species, Semiarundinaria fastuosa, is a tall, very upright grass producing viridescent canes which create lush architectural canopies, dramatically uplit and backdropped by a brick wall.

The central focal point is a large water feature. The oversized outline is clad with a slate block, contrasted by a tiny stainless steel spout pouring into a pebble pool. Angled, rendered, painted and lit, the water feature creates ripples which reflect silhouettes onto the high walls.

Buff sandstone flags are laid in a random pattern to match the adjoining open-plan kitchen flooring in shape, colour and tone. Walls have been rendered and painted in contrasting tints to add warmth & shadow and light interplays.

The raised beds vary in height, floating upon recessed plinths which create deep shadow gaps. A bbq, sofas, lighting, irrigation and a fire feature provide modern comforts to make this private courtyard a leafy, homely haven in Belgravia as a modern indoor-outdoor sanctuary.
