Built in 2008 & photographed in 2013 by Marianne Majerus, this large architectural roof garden is a sociable & green outdoor space, teeming with sculptural focal points, seating & LED lighting. Originally laid to lawn, railway sleepers & concrete, there was nothing worth keeping, so we started over from scratch.
Project Name: Chelsea Roof Garden
Studio Name: Mylandscapes LTD
We designed a diagonal deck leading towards the iconic Chelsea Bridge, contrasted by blue sandstone pavers & detailed with LED strip lighting to echo the Bridge’s illuminations. Bespoke planters provide bold centrepieces: 2-tiered & angular to match the existing architectural layout.
Leading up from an ultra-modern interior design, the first view is a multi-stemmed Himalayan birch tree, accompanied by the grassy Libertia ‘Goldfinger’. A duo of majestic Olive trees fringe the entrance pod, with Agapanthus. Pine, Magnolia, Thyme & Rosemary fill the rooftop with architectural redolence which isn’t just dramatic, but also withstands the highly exposed aspect: sunny & windy, suitable for these Mediterranean plants. 2 seating areas benefit from a 360-degree panorama over London from the 7th floor. A corner bench by Chelsea Bridge, and a one below the Pine tree with Battersea Power Station chimneys in view.
Westminster Abbey, London Eye, Big Ben & Wembley Arch are seen from various vantage points, giving iconic landmark vistas. With lighting & irrigation, this architectural roof terrace bestows a 24/7 leafy sanctuary. Lighting elevates all the distinctive qualities of the floras, with uplights, downlights, cavity lights & LED strip lighting which divides the space angularly.
